How long is a sleep cycle?

The average sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes, though individual cycles typically range from 70 to 120 minutes. A full cycle includes all stages: light sleep (NREM stages 1 and 2), deep sleep (NREM stage 3, also called slow-wave sleep), and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Over the course of a night, you'll go through approximately 4 to 6 complete cycles, with REM periods becoming longer in later cycles.

Is it better to wake up at the end of a sleep cycle?

Yes. Waking up at the end of a sleep cycle — when your body is naturally transitioning toward a lighter stage of sleep — is much easier than being jolted awake from deep sleep. If you wake up mid-cycle, especially during deep (slow-wave) sleep, you're likely to experience sleep inertia: grogginess, disorientation, and reduced cognitive performance that can last 30 minutes to an hour. This is why our calculator recommends alarm times aligned with cycle completion.

How many sleep cycles do I need per night?

Most adults need 4 to 6 complete sleep cycles per night, which translates to approximately 6 to 9 hours of sleep. The widely recommended target is 5 to 6 cycles (7.5 to 9 hours). Some people function well on 4 cycles (6 hours), but consistently getting fewer than 4 cycles is associated with increased risks of various health issues, including impaired immune function, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline.

How long does it take to fall asleep?

On average, it takes a healthy adult about 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep — a period called sleep onset latency. Why do I still feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?

Several factors beyond sleep-cycle timing affect how rested you feel: sleep quality (frequent awakenings or disorders like sleep apnea can fragment sleep), sleep consistency (irregular bedtimes disrupt your circadian rhythm), environment (light, noise, or temperature issues), and lifestyle (alcohol, caffeine, or late meals can interfere with deep sleep). What is the best time to go to bed and wake up?

The "best" schedule depends on your chronotype — whether you're a natural early bird (morning lark), a night owl, or somewhere in between. That said, research consistently shows that going to bed between 9 PM and 11 PM and waking between 6 AM and 8 AM aligns well with most people's circadian rhythms and environmental light-dark cycles. The most important factor is consistency: sticking to the same bedtime and wake time every day, including weekends, strengthens your circadian rhythm and improves overall sleep quality.
